Self-taught, Asafe explores his identity and relationship to the environments he inhabits. His work carries a sense of tension and rebellion, reclaiming identity and personal history while challenging dominant ideas around masculinity, gender, sexuality, and the representation of LGBTQIA+ people.
His work grows from collaboration with friends and fellow artists, using portraiture to explore identity, visibility, and empowerment. He is drawn to photography as a shared space where people can be seen in their “rawest, most beautiful and most empowered” form, often working through close, personal encounters in everyday settings.
